Last week, I shared that one way to get around Qatarโs new restrictions is by transferring flexible points to your spouse/partner and then booking from their account.
So hereโs a quick breakdown of which flexible points let you transfer points to another user:
Chase: Yes. You can share points with other Chase cardholders that share an address with you. You have to call the number on the back of your card to link your accounts first.
Each person must have one of the following cards: Chase Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, Ink Preferred or Sapphire Reserve for business.
Amex: You cannot transfer your Amex points to another Amex cardholder. But thereโs somewhat of a workaround. You can transfer your Amex points to an authorized user's airline or hotel loyalty account if they have been an AU for at least 90 days. They must be an AU on a card that earns Amex Membership Rewards. E.g. Amex Gold card, but not a Delta Gold card. To do this you just need to put in their frequent flyer number or hotel loyalty number when you go to transfer points.
Citi: No. Their points sharing feature was removed earlier this year.
Capital One: Yes. Points can be transferred to any Capital One member with a miles-earning card, you simply call and request it. You will need their credit card information.
Bilt: No. There is no points sharing ability offered by Bilt.
Rove: Yes. You can send miles to someone 3 times per year, and receive miles 3 times per year with a minimum of 2,000 sent and a maximum of 200,000 sent. You need to do so via online chat on their website.
So as you can see being able to transfer your points to another person depends heavily on which type of flexible points you have.
Of course the other way around this is by transferring to an airline or hotel program that then lets you transfer those points and miles to another user. This feature varies greatly by airline, so I'd have to recommend you look that up if needing to do that.
However, I've developed a dashboard that makes it easier to identify this (among many other things). It's part of a larger product I'm offering and will announce more soon!
P.S. Hi from Montana. We're in the middle of our big summer trip. First stop was Glacier National Park, and it was awesome.
We stayed in Kalispell using IHG points, but didn't realize there's now a Hyatt Studios there. I could've used Chase points and knocked out another Hyatt brand their Brand Explorer! Next time.
